It takes discipline and self-control to stay focused amid all the distractions in this digital world. To draw out the best of this, decluttering the clutter is the key. Though technology has grown to create apps to help, our houses still need us.
Our houses have all that we love to hoard more than what we need. Restraining the presence of unnecessary items or elements and limiting to the essential ones, is where we welcome Minimalism. Minimalism in architecture is a result of an art movement dated back in the 1960’s in the city of New York. And Bauhaus has illustrated the art of minimalism.
Though minimalism is about essentials, it doesn’t need to lack style or luxury. Therefore, it’s also not an easy task at hand. It’s like drawing a single dot on a plain paper that becomes the focus of the entire space yet strike the balance with the void.
While we practice minimalism in architecture, it’s about simplified yet standout geometry, an amalgamation of form with function. Working on built form elements, leaving wide open spaces and letting natural light play the lead is one of the bases to start with. It goes along with plain internal walls on a stretch with limited opening resulting in the lesser circulation area.
The material in minimalism is not limited to selecting essential ones, it’s a domain to explore the most. How? Materials possess the most enhancing quality of all, “texture”. A wall with a simpler material of great texture makes a bold statement and yet stays the least. The selection of such material is crucial.
Now, how about using a single material in all the possible forms that we could? Such creation can be seen in a Dental Clinic project by Artisaans. Here, the material HDHMR (i.e. High-Density MDF) is used in different forms and applications throughout the project.
To balance the material palette, a limited count of materials (i.e. HDHMR, Corian, quartz, mirror, and glass) is used.
When we step into designing interiors with a minimalistic approach, we start with a focal element. Since we may opt for muted colour palettes. Interiors can always brighten up by placing essential, minimum yet statement pieces. You can always find a piece of standout furniture and let it do the work for space. Adding antique pieces from various cultures also does the work.
When sunsets, lightings play the most important roles. When we limit the exaggeration of multiple lighting options. You can also go for lights that come out as art themselves. Choosing all the interior elements of the finest finishes enhances its presence.
When we look closely at the interior of this Dental Clinic, the use of very minimal colours is visible. White, Green, and Rose Gold. The designers at Artisaans have opted to portray a Minimalistic Tropical Scandi look, which makes the clinic stand apart as a healthcare setup pan India.
Minimalism in architecture is not only about a trend in architecture fraternity, but it is also an attempt to save our resources and our energy to invest in.
